Shimoni Caves

Shimoni means ‘ Place of The Hole’.The Shimoni caves are located in Shimoni, a small peaceful village. The village is located 76 kilometers south of Likoma near the border of Kenya.

The Shimoni caves are easily accessible by roads and only takes two hours (when driving) to reach the caves. They are located 15 kilometers off the main Mombasa to Lungalunga road.

The caves are a fascinating historical site which was previously used as kayas-shrines and hiding places for the Digo people who hid from the hinterland.

Later on, the Arabs used the caves as a pen to hold slaves pending the arrival of ship to transfer to Zanzibar, a famous slave market, for onward shipment to Arabia. Most slaves were captured from the hinterland. Iron shackles can still be seen on the walls and well preserved wooden crates, used to transport slaves are still found in the cave. Now the caves are managed by the Shimoni community with proceeds going to community based activities.

Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest

In the coastal regions of Kenya, the local sacred forest are called Kayas. They are pockets of forest found in the contiguous Kwale, Kilifi and Malindi Districts. They owe their existence directly to the cultural beliefs and history of the nine (9) Coastal Mijikenda ethnic groups. Kaya Kinondo is the senior most Kaya (home) of the Digo community.

Kaya Kinondo is reported to harbour 52 bird species and 192 plant species. The current pristine status of many Kayas demonstrates the important role that social taboos have played in biodiversity conservation over time; these forests have remained intact due to taboos that prohibited tree felling, livestock grazing and extraction of forest products.

Visitors to Kaya Kinondo enjoy a guided walk into the forest during which the community shares information on the Kaya and other aspects of the local culture. They also get the opportunity to visit Kinondo village and interact with members of the local community, including the medicine man. Other activities that are available here include performances, sale of handicrafts and visits to the local school.
